Alexandre CHAGNES International Solvent Extraction Conference 2025

Alexandre CHAGNES

After conducting research on the electrochemistry of lithium-ion batteries in France and the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of organic compounds in Canada, Prof. Alexandre Chagnes began focusing on hydrometallurgy between 2005 and 2016 at Chimie Paristech (Paris) as an Associate Professor. Since 2016, he has been a Full Professor at Université de Lorraine. From 2014 to 2020, he served as the Director of the national network on extractive metallurgy (Promethee) and was the Director of Industrial Partnerships at the Engineering School of Geology (Nancy, France) from 2018 to 2022. He was also the Scientific Director of the LabEx RESSOURCES21 from 2016 to 2024. Currently, he is the Director of the Research Program on Circular Economy for energy and digital transitions at Université de Lorraine, which brings together 14 laboratories focused on the value chain of metals, resource economics, and business models. In addition, Prof. Chagnes is the Founder of the start-up WEEEMET, which develops innovative hydrometallurgical processes for recycling metals from the digital transition. His research focuses on developing a fundamental understanding of the physicochemical processes involved in metal recovery from both primary and secondary resources, with the aim of creating new processes or improving existing ones. His current research is centered on flowsheet development for lithium-ion battery recycling, with industrial collaborations and government funding, as well as the recycling of PC motherboards through WEEEMET, a start-up co-founded by Prof. Chagnes and Eric Louvert. Prof. Chagnes has published 161 papers, 7 books, 15 book chapters, and holds 3 patents in the fields of solution chemistry, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and separation science. He has delivered 192 talks at national and international conference.
